Exploring Causeway Bay

A very open shoe store. Daiva is on the sidewalk

This week was another slow one and a pretty lazy one at that. Daiva and I decided to explore around our neighborhood a little more as we find that we tend to stick to the same paths. We have our path to the MTR station, to the grocery store, the agency and don't normally have the need to deviate from said paths. So this week we decided to explore a little more. There wasn't a lot that we found, just stores and a little market. We checked out Victoria Park as well but it was over crowded and not as 'park like' as I was expecting. It did have a jogging path so maybe during the week when it's less crowded I'll try that out. If I'm brave enough to jog in this heat that is.

Victoria Park

Daiva and I also got very tired of not having a mirror in our room. After a month of only having a large mirror in the bathroom we decided we needed to buy one for ourselves. Luckily, we found an Ikea right by the grocery store we go to. Walking home carrying a mirror more than half the size of me through the crowded streets was an adventure. I thought I was going to poke someone's eyes out!  We aren't allowed to hang things on the wall so we have it propped up on a chair but that works just fine for us.

KIVITZ @ Moshaict Bazaar Part II

Assalamu'alaikum

Hello teman, apa kabar semua? Tepat 2 minggu lalu. Seperti biasa, setiap acara Hijabers Community, kita selalu dimake up oleh Wardah. Sedikit ga pede saya kalau make up begini. Hehe...

One month down

My second cousins!

This past week has been more free time than work. With only four castings for the entire week I had plenty of time to spare. Unfortunately the rain that continued through most of the days was less than inspiring to go site seeing. Instead, this weeks focus shifted from daytime to night. Dragon I, Halo, Fly, and Volar all got visited and many meals and drinks were consumed.

But I realized that I've been here for a month now and have done barely any site seeing! I'm planning to change that soon, especially with the arrival of my sister and mom next week.

Tonight, instead of heading out with the usual crew, I had a dinner with my mom's cousin's family. They took me to a Thai restaurant called Soho Spice. Meeting new relatives was lovely and they were such friendly people that I'm sure I will be seeing them again soon. The two daughters (my second cousins?) are the same age as me and we got along really well but they leave tomorrow for a month in China so hopefully I will see them when they get back!

Speaking of China, my work visa came today and apparently to activate it I need to leave the country then come back. So unless I get an international job in the next two weeks, I have a little trip to make. I'm thinking a trip to Macau would be fun! Or going up into China could be interesting.

Mongkok and Dragon I

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

On Saturday Daiva and I headed to Mongkok to check out the Ladies Market. Mongkok station and the area surrounding the market was insanely busy but inside the market wasn't too bad. It was mostly just tourist items, iphone cases, jewelery, and knock off purses. I enjoyed looking around but didn't find anything to buy. We did head to an H&M on our way home where I found a dress though. We also found a store right near our apartment with really cheap but actually kind of nice clothes.

Ladies Market
Later we went out for dinner at Dragon I where we met up with an old room mate of Daiva's and two of her friends. It was a fun night followed by a lazy Sunday.

Monday involved three castings and another dinner at Dragon I. Four people out of seven at our table were from Vancouver! Apparently Hong Kong is the second most popular place for Canadians to move to (after the United States).

It's getting hot out there

Some pretty building I could see from an outdoor MTR station
It's been a week since my last post, oops. It's been a pretty busy week with a couple castings each day and two jobs. The temperature here has been an insanely hot 34 degrees most days. Add that temperature in with the humidity and you get very uncomfortable walks.

Waiting for the elevator at a casting

Monday I had a couple of castings. my booker sends me texts the night before to tell me my castings but the information I have to go on is very brief. It'll say something like fashion editorial casting and have a time and address and that's all I have to work with. I have no idea who I'm showing up to meet. So Monday's text said cocktail event casting and had the time and address so I google map the address, throw on a skirt and top and head over there. I step out of the elevator to find I'm in the Giorgio Armani offices. Quite a change from my casting that morning that had been in a studio tucked away in some industrial building warehouse. I'm just thinking that some warning would be nice. But I just have to be prepared for anything I suppose.

I had a job on Tuesday for TOD'S. They make shoes, bags, and coats so guess what I was modeling. Thankfully they turned up the A/C for us so the winter coats weren't too bad. My Canadian room mate, Evan, and I both had the job which was nice. It was a showroom for their new Fall line so we just had to walk around the room and pose in the clothing. Editors from magazines and photographers were there so they would pull us outside for little photo shoots every once in a  while. I'm not sure where all the photo's will end up but we did leave them our emails so that they could send us some of the pictures. So far I haven't gotten any yet.

Wednesday was more castings and Thursday I have a Fashion editorial job for a newspaper. It was a pretty boring shoot but most of the time was spent in hair/makeup and traveling to the location and setting up so a pretty easy shoot. We ended around 5:30 and I was starving and couldnt resist stopping at the Triple O's in the Time's Square food court before heading home. Though later that night we decided to go for a Model's dinner at Halo so I ended up eating a lot that night!

It tasted like home and made me a little homesick

July 1st

This was the major protest about a block from where we live

Yesterday was July 1st. Known as Canada day and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day. While Canada is a happy holiday with Canadian pride, the holiday here sparks protests. There were hundreds of police around the city and streets were blocked off for the protest marches.

We decided to get out of the city to escape the crowds and go to Repulse Bay Beach instead. Finding the bus was a bit difficult because a lot of the routes had to be changed and the usual bus stop we would have used was in the middle of a protest. But we found it and half an hour later arrived in Repulse bay.

RB has a reputation of being busy so this was a nice surprise

There was a hotel up from the beach built around Chinese superstition. According to legends a dragon flies down from the mountain to the beach every year so when a hotel was built, they left a space for the dragon.
